Hey there. So I am watching Empire Strikes Back, and it is awesome. Anyway. A little less than one week till Boone. So thats fun. Thinking about getting my ears pierced, so that would be interesting. Lately I have been feeling odd about going back, no question I want to get back to see people, friends and the like. Really just being in Boone is great, a sense of freedom and such. But this time, its weird. It this restlessness ya know? Being unsure if I am where I am supposed to be. I don't really have any other options, so for now, I will go back to Boone. In these odd feelings I've been having, my leadership with InterVarsity has been prominent. So to get myself more focused into the mindset of leadership, I decided to see what the bible has to say about leadership.
The one passage that stuck out the most to me was this:
Matthew 20:25-28
25Jesus called them together and said, "You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. 26Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, 27and whoever wants to be first must be your slave— 28just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."
Leadership is a position of servitude. I don't just mean it is a position of service, but one of lowering of ourselves in service to others. John 3:30 John the Baptist says of his work "He must become greater; I must become less." We are, as Paul calls himself, bond-servants of Christ. We lower ourselves so that He may be lifted up. We are to lead by example, as Jesus did. Take this for example John 13 1-11, Jesus washes the disciple's feet, then says this:
John 13:12-17
12When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. "Do you understand what I have done for you?" he asked them. 13"You call me 'Teacher' and 'Lord,' and rightly so, for that is what I am. 14Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet. 15I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. 16I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.
What Jesus is saying is pretty straight forward. We are to serve each other, in a place lower than them. Does that mean physically washing the feet of those around us? Maybe. But I think it had other applications too. I think what Jesus is getting at is a heart issue. Lowering ourselves physically is one thing, but having a humble heart is something completely different. I talked about humility in one of my previous blogs, so scroll down and have a look at it. Service to others, done in the correct fashion, is service to God. Remember the words of Matthew 25:40 "I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me."
This reminds me of the song "God of Justice" by Tim Hughes
God of Justice, Saviour to all
Came to rescue the weak and the poor
Chose to serve and not be served
Jesus, You have called us
Freely we've received
Now freely we will give
We must go live to feed the hungry
Stand beside the broken
We must go
Stepping forward keep us from just singing
Move us into action
We must go
To act justly everyday
Loving mercy in everyway
Walking humbly before You God
You have shown us, what You require
Freely we've received
Now freely we will give
Fill us up and send us out
Really good song, kinda outlines what I've been talking about tonight. Especially that last verse. Have a look at Micah 6:8 in parallel to that. Just thought I would suggest that as a side note.
We have to have a right heart as we serve, because theres a good chance that in service to others, we are going to run across things we don't want to do. Philippians 2:14-15 says "14Do everything without complaining or arguing, 15so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe." In our humble and Christ- like service we are beacons of light that reflect the glory of our almighty God. So as we serve, as we lead, we have to keep a right heart and a clean mind. Everything for the glory of God.
That was just on my mind this past week.
Here is a selection from "Little Wing" by Jimi Hendrix from the album "Axis: Bold as Love" Also, notice the prominent figures from Hinduism on the album cover.
Well she's walking through the clouds
With a circus mind that's running round
Butterflies and zebras
And moonbeams and fairy tales
That's all she ever thinks about
Riding with the wind.
When I'm sad, she comes to me
With a thousand smiles, she gives to me free
It's alright she says it's alright
Take anything you want from me,
Anything.
Fly on little wing.
